Forgive me if I'm spelling this name incorrectly. :) Prilanka is the name of the very lovely young lady who modeled for my drawing group Monday night. Four things occurred to me last night while sketching:

• I hate drawing ears (this is not a new epiphany, but a reoccurring one)
• I really need to remember to bring my camera to these drawing sessions
• I really need to post on these drawing sessions more regularly
• I need to stop missing these sessions

I don't mean to miss them. Too often I get caught up in the minutiae and stresses of a Monday at work that I'll forget to go or feel "too tired" or, worse case scenario, work late and end up not being able to get there on time, so I don't go at all. Its fun to attend; the ladies the run the drawing group are a lot of fun and very willing to teach as well.

Dirty Drawers meets each Monday at the Center for Contemporary Arts. Led by some fine ladies who are either art instructors or professional painters or both. All levels of artists are welcome to join, and enjoy some lively conversation and the opportunity to draw from live models.

In A Crowded Room

Just finished this painting tonight; I've been working on it for about two weeks now.

This is the first in piece in the "dammit, I'm determined to paint regularly" resolution.

I made that resolution last summer sometime. And managed to squeeze out only a few paintings between then and now. So a support resolution was made back in January; when I get my tax money this year, after I've made some big payments on a few bills, whatever's left of said tax money, I will buy a bunch of canvases and paints and start painting. The goal to ultimately have a dozen or so pieces done by June so that I could have a portfolio to start peddling about town to try to get them shown or to start selling prints online or something professional with my art.

Its May now... I have 4 paintings... so... I need to bang out a minimum of 8 more... I've set the bar very high. I promise to not beat myself up emotionally if I don't meet the dozen deadline- as long as I know I've made an honest effort to get myself painting more often.

No more sitting around the apartment feeling bored, wondering what to do with myself- I already know what I want to do with myself! Good grief! The eternal battle with procrastination will be won by me if I have to chain myself to my painting table!

Moving on to the piece in question. Its titled: In A Crowded Room

This is a diptych. I'm really keen on the idea of doing a few diptychs and triptychs... I actually aspire to eventually do a piece with as many as 7-12 ... er... um... "tychs"? What would you call a seven piece "tych"- a septych? Which sounds like septic... hmm... I'll leave that to mull about in the noggin.

I will post close ups of the textures later or tomorrow as the batteries died in the camera and I can't find the ones I know I have lying around here somewhere. :)

Creepy Happy Family

I found this photo on a stock photo site while searching for ... well, stock photos. Point. I was struck initially by the way 70s/early 80s look of the mom and child. When I clicked the link to view the enlarged version and found that this serene duo were sporting a snake... Frankly, I was completely confused (and a little bit frightened). Still am. I have no clue what kind of ad or what kind of anything I would use this photo for. Maybe a cd album cover for some punk band?

I've stared at this photo off and on all morning. It keeps distracting me- luring me to come back and look at it again. I want to use this in an ad! Maybe a bible study class for one of the local churches... Ah... if only I lived in a town that had a sense of humor...

In My Green Dress

Details:

Originally, I wanted to paint the actress Felicity Huffman. Found this really nice photo of her in a magazine; she was wearing this lovely green dress that just really made her eyes and soft blond hair really pop. But unfortunately, my brain and hands did not seem to want to work together at all on this project.

I tried painting her twice. Ended up taking a few days break and completely restarted the painting- pouring gesso all over it, and starting from scratch.

Funny side story- it was sunny and warm yesterday afternoon. So I took the painting outside to pour the gesso over it and create the yellow background. After I was all done making my mess, I discovered I locked myself out of the apartment. I had to wait for the ol' fiancée to come home from work in order to get back in. Thankfully, I only had to wait about 30 minutes. Excellent timing on my part indeed.

So, I finished her last night in one big angry push to "get it done or else." I gave up on trying to make her look like Felicity Huffman. Instead I allowed myself to veer off into the candy colored world of pop art. These really bright colors are a departure from my usual darker colors which I'm happy about because I really want to use more perky colors for the next set of paintings I'm planning.

I'm actually planning to try to do a series. This'll be a challenge for me because I've (a) never done a series and (b) forever struggle to make myself paint a pre-determined image- I often end up fighting with every detail until I finally give up and "let" the painting do what it wants (hence the result of my non-Felicity Huffman piece)-- my Not Clara piece is to date, the only piece that I've executed and finished according to a planned image.

Still a learning process with me.

I couldn't drive to work because the roads were too slick (and my busted up car fishtailed the two blocks that I did attempt)... So, I tried to work from home a bit. simply put, time lapse video of myself painting my newest painting (as of 15 nov 08) from beginning to end.

a note on the music chosen. the video is 25 minutes long and i had a hard time picking music for the video. so i finally caved and chose the longest song that i have in my library, arlo guthrie's "alice's restaurant massacre" which took up 18 minutes leaving me to only have to choose a couple more to fill in the gap at the end. i hope you enjoy both the painting and the arlo guthrie & joe cocker music.

Dirty Drawers

So I've officially joined a drawing group called The Dirty Drawers. Basically, we meet on monday nights to draw a model and gab. Its mostly older women who've known each other for years who are all artists in various professional forms (painter, teacher, etc).

I say "officially" in so much as that I intend to actually attend more than one meeting this year. The DD group meet during the school year and break a few weeks each summer. I've known about the group for about 3 years and have managed to attend a total of two sessions in that time- the primary excuses being I either kept forgetting to go or was working some job that required I work Monday nights. Not this year! Oh no- THIS year I WILL attend EVERY monday night session- or I will die trying.

And so- here is my first drawing. Enjoy. :)

"She Looks Like A Grace" - Acrylic on Canvas (Aug 2008)

Just finished her last night! While cooking dinner even; it isn't hard to imagine me cooking dinner while painting since I paint in the kitchen, canvas propped up on the kitchen counter.

Ok, so I mentioned in the posts of my previous paintings that I rarely go into a painting with a specific idea in mind. Even when I do, its even more rare that the end result is what I had in mind. That said- here's me going into a piece with a plan in mind and I actually got my hand and brain and paint to all work together! Go team!

The plan was simple- I wanted to paint someone in blue and green. Pulled a picture out of a magazine- I think she came from some article about women building their own businesses or something. Mostly I picked her because I liked how wavy her hair was- possibly a superficial method of picking a model but oh well.

A side note is that I find I really love making textures. When prepping my canvas with gesso or laying down my background color- I spend an inordinate amount of time just playing. Making a great unholy mess of lines and prickly bits and globby bits. When the entire painting is done, I love gliding my hand over the surface and feeling all the bumps. And am ever amused by this since I actually hate popcorn walls and ceilings in homes- I like walls and ceilings in homes to have smooth textures (making exceptions for metal or wood paneling on walls or ceilings or textured wall papers or whatever)- I'm weird, I accept this.

"Building The ?" - Acrylic on Canvas (August 2008)

"Building the... Building the, er... Um... The what? Whelp, that is the question." Is what I kept saying to myself over and over while I was painting and after it was finished.

I'm not very good at coming up with names for the paintings. Quite honestly, I rarely enter into a painting project with any specific image or message in mind. Most times I just start by picking out colors and start making a mess. Eventually I'll either make a conscious decision to start making something, or something will start to appear to my eye and I'll build on that.

As a result of not going in with any set plan, I am rarely left with any sort of "amazing" or "thought provoking" title... The title usually starts floating around in my head all on its own- I don't really have a very concrete method of naming. I guess that lends to the sense of spontaneity of the act of painting... Or it could just be proof that I have no clue what I'm doing but who cares, its fun and I like painting; clueless painting or sponteneous painting or otherwise.

"Discovery" - Acrylic on Canvas (August 2008)

I very briefly (VERY BRIEFLY) toyed with the titles: Ylla's Child or Ylla's Dream... In reference to the character Ylla in Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles. But then remembered that the Earth astronauts are murdered by her husband, Yll. I thought that might the painting seem kind of sad and I just really liked the more hopeful sound of Discovery, not to mention that was the word that dogged my every brush stroke, so it won- that was my thought process anyway.

I started this painting the last week of July and finished it in the first week of August. No. Let me back track a bit. The red background was done in June... Then it hung on a wall forever until it was ready for me to move on and ad more to it. At the risk of sounding like a schizophrenic- yes, the paintings do talk to me occasionally and tell me when they are or aren't ready to be worked on. Ok- well they don't exactly use words per se- its just a vibe I get. Moving on before I sound completely daft.

So Jed emails me this article about scientists finding earth-like planets. My initial response to his email was this: Yes.... But is there life on these planets? Are they looking at us? Are they thinking, “we can take them.” To which he replied, We’d better build up that nuclear arsenal. You know, just in case. And that got me thinking, but what if the aliens are thinking the same thing? And this is what I drew.

ialogue reads:

A1: I find it highly exciting... what if there's life there?

A2: And what if they're looking at us thinking, "we can take 'em!"

A1: Now you sound like one of those conspiracy nuts.

I started drawing this guy earlier (after my sad little gargoyle)... for me this was an exercise of a variety my weak points- shading, cross hatching, foreshortening and muscle tone... I have a trouble with making my shading properly indicate the direction of light- it think I did a good job here, hopefully it looks like the primary light sources is above him... I need to work on shading for sure... but I feel I'm getting better the more I do these daily sketches. =)

this is a sneak peak of some of the stuff i've been working on for my webcomic. as for the website for the comic... we're still working on this. procrastination is our middle names. actually its a combo of procrastination and trying to teach ourselves stuff about rss feeds and web publishing and html, etc. i realize there are plenty of sites out there that make the job easy- a lot of plug and play formats or templates, but we (jed & i) really want to learn as much as we can about making a site for our own personal edification... that mumbo jumbo aside... my format is a reflection of my constant need to switch things up so i don't bore myself. i plan to operate as though i'm writing short stories- so instead of attempting to maintain one style of comic with set characters and continue following exploits of set characters for years and years; i plan to only devote about 2-4 weeks per story... i'm shooting for a 5 day a week upload schedule, hence why i'm trying to get as many strips done prior to launch as possible, so that i have a massive buffer in place in the event something extreme such as i'm out of the country or something as simple as i'm trying to write a new story or experiment with a new art style, or whatever... also, i'd like for us to have our web site launched before i go on my trip-- sigh... while some things are still up in the air, i am forcing myself to maintain a set drawing schedule... some days, i'm better at sticking to this schedule than i am others... i'm babbling now- probably because its near midnight and its past my bedtime. for now, enjoy some of these sketches. thanks!

Fall Semester 2005, Digital Publishing II Final Project: To create a book. The purpose of the book was to demonstrate what I had learned about publishing this semester- everyone had the same content but style of illustration was left entirely up to the individual. The images in this gallery are of my illustrations (using photoshop, illustrator and freehandmx).

Actually--- these are some photos that I took in 1999. I've just always loved them.

Taken with a 35mm film camera-- not sure what kind it was. The camera belonged to the girls in the photo-- and it was my first time working with something that wasn't point and shoot.

He is the illustrator of my two of my favorite of childrens book (and is always the first name that pops into my head when people ask me who my favorite artist is). It's very hard to find info on him- most sites on the internet are created by fans of McKean. And, there's the website of Neil Gaiman- author of two of my favorite children's books (which also happen to be the books Mckean illustrated). Mr. Gaiman does make mention of their long careers and friendship.

Why do I like Dave McKean's work? I don't know. I just do.

I like the mix of medias in his work. Specifically in the books The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish and Wolves In The Walls. I love the color washes and the torn pages of print and the sketchlike style of the illustrations of the Goldfish book, and I love the use of texture in Wolves- the very real hair of the little girl on her puppet like features encased in pen and ink- the peanut butter and jelly page is great.

Then there's the dark pen and ink drawings in Coraline. Until I found Coraline, I didn't think to do any research on Gaiman or McKean (don't ask me why). But the dark quality of both the story and the drawings were (to me and my humble opinion) such a radical departure from the Goldfish book, I was a little shocked. Shocked that they could be so different- I don't know why, I just was. After that I did sit down and try to do some research on these two men. I discovered that they've done quite a bit of dark work- in fact, they've worked on the Sandman series. In the graphic novel/comic book world, these are some of the BEST works ever. Period.

As I am new to the comic book world and still quite uninformed about the subject, I have not read this series yet- but intend to. As soon as I have money. Which may not be very soon.

But until then- I will do my best to enjoy the books that I do own, and the works that I can find online.

And finally, here is the piece I did for my class:
The Golden Apple
It's faery tale that I read a very long time ago. It's the tale of Jack (isn't it always)- he is the youngest of three brothers, sons to a kind and generous king. The king has been poisened and is quite ill, the doctors tell the boys that only a golden apple will serve as an antidote to the poison. The king begs his sons to go forth and find such an apple, and he who returns with it shall inherit the kingdom.

So, the three boys set forth. The two older brothers ditch young Jack because they think he'll only slow down their progress. On his own, Jack manages to go on a grand adventure that includes a meeting a mean old man (who I think, serves as the wise counselor of the tale), a terrible troll, an uncomfortable nights sleep, a glass lake home to very large swans, a castle that is home to a great dragon and a sleeping beauty and the golden apple. And, the story doesn't even end with Jack bringing the apple back to the king, he also has to save the princess and fell a giant.

Definitely a mish mash of a lot of faery tale elements- probably why I loved it- I love complicated stories. And so, here is my illustration for the story.

Since i already had photoshop open... i figured i'd play with their ad... the ad they have in the local phone book doesn't look very attention grabbing (in my humble opinion). here's what i'd do with the ad if they were to ask for my opinion (using my logo, of course).

A local Chinese restaurant was looking for a new logo, and ran a competition in town. I did three different versions- but ended up submitting the first of the three featured below. Wish me luck!

And this is the sketch of the drawing I used for the logo. The dress was inspired by Chinese gowns of the Tang Dynasty- I used photos from popular Hong Kong action theater costumes as reference... ;-) The challenge for me was to not make it look like a Japanese kimono- I think I did a fair job. After sketching a rough on paper, I scanned it into photo shop and just went with basic black, white and greys.

My Color Wheel Project (Fall 2004)

My first semester at TSTC, I took a class called "Basic Graphic Design." The final project for this class was to create a "creative" color wheel. I had recently discovered the Japanese artist Hiroshige (thanks to my fiance's mother), and so I decided to do some water color pictures for the project.

Below you will find three of the smaller images as well as what the complete piece looked like all mounted together. I did not include individual copies of the woman holding my color wheel parasol because I'm not happy with the piece (the colors bled together in the parasol)- I had trouble getting the consistency right because prior to this I hadn't painted with watercolors in over seven years! All things considered, I am still quite proud of this piece.
